Messy Church is a church for adults and children to enjoy together, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. Everyone is welcome, and it is especially suitable for families with children up to the age of eleven. It usually includes some creative time to explore the biblical theme through getting messy; a celebration time which might involve story, prayer, song, games and similar; and a meal together.
Here at St Bartholomews, we have Messy Church twice a term, on a Sunday afternoon at 3pm in the Church Centre. Details of times and dates can be found in the weekly notices, on the website calendar and we also put a banner up outside the church to let everyone know.
We start with an hour of fun and creativity in the church centre, where there will be lots of activities on offer based round a bible story. Many of them will be quite messy – so it's best to wear something that can be easily washed, or bring an apron.
After that we have a simple service in the church, which usually last about 25 minutes. There will be story from the bible continuing the theme of the earlier activities, some short prayers, and lots of singing – the songs we sing are age appropriate worship songs rather than traditional hymns, and are often ones children will have sung in school. They have actions, so even children too young to read the words (which are projected on a screen) can join in with the actions. Sometimes we have puppets to help tell the story. The atmosphere is very relaxed with an emphasis on everyone joining in.
We then all go back into the church centre to sit down for tea together- sandwiches, cakes, and drinks for all – and a chance to chat. If you would like more information, please contact the Church office, and we hope to see you at Messy Church soon.
